Financial Models and Prototypes

In a start-up or new venture setting the core idea of building a financial model is to test the business model before it is launched. See if the economics work and the numbers add up. It also functions as a benchmark to measure actual performance against and as a tool for understand where the original idea and real life differ.

I have developed a method for making financial models which is based on the well known and widely used Business Model Canvas tool. Each element of the tool is broken down into smaller and smaller components gradually fleshing out how the “machine” works. Once these inner workings are examined they can be be translated into numbers and built into a model.
